Cathi's Reviews - 4-8-08
Big Daddy O – “What You Gotta Go Through” (Rabadash Rec.) B+Acoustic guitar and instrumentation very compelling. Dedicated to 23 years old daughter-died. Nice slide guitar.
Very tasty arrangements…nice vocals, really nice collection of styles of music too. Thoughtful songwriting with lots of philosophy and some references to God/faith. John Prine approach to music. Good for all mixes…nice tunes.
Collins, Albert – “Live at Montreaux” (Eagle Records) B+
Collin’s guitar showcase -- Live disc…starts with intro and applause. Big band with horns/heavy organ backup. Has predictable sound problems (feedback, audience sounds, and sometimes imbalance of instruments—notably loud organ), but has the real feel of Albert’s live shows. Nice to hear him in action with his very electric guitar chops. Not necessarily for morning mix. Long cuts?
Kearns, Michael & Lonely Mammals – “Death or Life” (Hornepayne Rec) B
First disc recorded in Mark Robinson’s Nashville studio -- Mark on guitar. Recorded live in the studio. Most songs written by vocalist/acous guitar – Michael Kearnes. Robinson tasty on support electric guitar. Nice turn of words as usually demanded by Nashville country writers. Melodies kind of plain. CD nicely recorded.
Leopold – “And His Fiction” (Planetary) C-
Screamy rock – pumped up distort guitar and simplistic chords with lotsa volume. This CD just shrieks pimples. Not recommended.
Lil’ Brian & The Travelers – “Worldwide” (Hi Rollers Entertainment) B
Zydeco music with accordion and lots of horns and beat. Brothers goin’ after funky zydeco, liberally sprinkled with hormones, and ‘hood” references. Dance party music.
Love Drive – “In a Perfect World” (Indie) C
Chick singer (going for the Blondie/Blue Oyster cult thing. Not my thing at all). Nowhere near blues. Nowhere near a perfect world. Not recommended.
Radiators – “Dreaming Out Loud” (Radz Rec.) B
Light rock along the springsteen line. Not bad vocalist fronting some good musicians. Guitarist likes distortion. Songs perfectly listenable but not memorable. Not really recommended.
