In commemoration of their 10-year anniversary, San Fran indie label Six Degrees, compiled covers by artists from around the world. Artists like Ojos de Brujo and Banco de Gaia, no strangers to WFHB, cover Bob Marley and Pink Floyd. Most of these tracks remind me how much I appreciate the original versions of …let’s see…the Cure’s Love Song, and Jimi Hendrix’s If 6 was 9. Basically the lyrics and tunes are set to drum machines and or other electronic systems in a fashion that Six Degrees calls, “mixing old with the new.” Stripping some of the songs of soul in the process.comments / tracks of interest: (in order of favor)

King Sunny Ade has a new record release...Gems From the Classic Years
Crisp recordings from the pre-internationalized performances of King Sunny Ade’s juju music, unfold here in the form of 4 long melodies, and then some. Gems features selected songs from 12 albums between 1967-1974, and “demonstrates Ade’s evolution as he became a star in Nigeria.” Roots dig into W. Nigerian Yoruba rhythms via congas, talking and tap drums, sekere, & sticks. Add those sounds to electronic bass, multiple electric guitars and back-up vocals and dancing and feel the warmth of King Sunny Ade’s royal juju legacy.
