fresh tunes

[+/-] show/hide

In commemoration of their 10-year anniversary, San Fran indie label Six Degrees, compiled covers by artists from around the world. Artists like Ojos de Brujo and Banco de Gaia, no strangers to WFHB, cover Bob Marley and Pink Floyd. Most of these tracks remind me how much I appreciate the original versions of …let’s see…the Cure’s Love Song, and Jimi Hendrix’s If 6 was 9. Basically the lyrics and tunes are set to drum machines and or other electronic systems in a fashion that Six Degrees calls, “mixing old with the new.” Stripping some of the songs of soul in the process.

comments / tracks of interest: (in order of favor)

#10: very soft female vocals with string & piano.
#7: Bob Marly cover by Ojos de Brujo~ Get Up Stand Up
#11: Supersynth version of P. Floyd’s~ Echoes
#12: instrumental
#8: reggae rhythms
FCC:#9 FCC (“SHIT”)

King Sunny Ade has a new record release...Gems From the Classic Years
Crisp recordings from the pre-internationalized performances of King Sunny Ade’s juju music, unfold here in the form of 4 long melodies, and then some. Gems features selected songs from 12 albums between 1967-1974, and “demonstrates Ade’s evolution as he became a star in Nigeria.” Roots dig into W. Nigerian Yoruba rhythms via congas, talking and tap drums, sekere, & sticks. Add those sounds to electronic bass, multiple electric guitars and back-up vocals and dancing and feel the warmth of King Sunny Ade’s royal juju legacy.

looking for new music?

[+/-] show/hide

Andy Narell's Tatoom:
This is a sound that is new to my ears, a steel orchestra. The tracks feel cool and smooth, and all are instrumentals. Like easy-listening jazz where steel drums take lead for the long haul.
#1. Med. Tempo, jubilant melodies.

Alain Perez is, En El Aire:
Modern Cuban jazz musician, Alain Perez’s musical life began, “singing at family parties and fiestas,” in his hometown. After studying classical guitar and piano, he transferred to a prestigious school in Havana. It was in Havana where he picked up the bass, which is the instrument he plays here, en el aire. Most tracks house a full sound with sharp brass accompaniment, and the congas assure that this is indeed modern Cuban jazz.
#5: vocals in beginning, noticeable tempo changes throughout
#6: vocals, piano, saxophone; simpler sounding ballet
#7: seemingly difficult rhythm changes
#8: “phone vocals” make for an interesting sound for this c.d.
#9: Rumba#11: bonus track dedicated to his grandfather (mostly guitar)

the Rough Guide releases, Bollywood Gold:
This is Bollywood music from the “twenty-two carat” period, when Bollywood films were becoming increasingly popular. The music provides a familiar music milieu for first generation immigrants in the U.K. and N. America. The tunes from this era have been shared through generations and at familial gatherings as a unique taste of the ‘Motherland,’ India. After 1951, actors began to lip-sync to a “playback singer,” and this album contains cherished singers like, Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, and Mohammed Rafi.

Rough Guide to, World Music Africa & Middle East:
Tuareg guitar bands, Ethiopian New Wave beats, Sudanese hip-hop and flamenco-Arabesque. This is some of the music featured here, by both familiar and unfamiliar names from the African & M. Eastern region. It is a vast compilation of innovative music. Check out the sleeve for interesting information about each artist.
#1: a radiating GIGI vibe (Ethiopia)
#4: a haunting melody from Baaba Mal & Mansour Seck (Senegal)
#5: “synchro system” modernized ancestral apala music (Nigeria)
#6: happy female vocals & kora adaptations (Guinea)
#9: vocals have the timbre of vibrations from the mimbira (Congo)
#10: fusion of drum machine and ancient devotional poetry (Israel)
#12: highly danceable, quite catchy (Morocco)
#13: a love & praise song~Tuareg style (Niger)
#14: hypnotic and funky w/ strong female vocals (W. Sahara)#15: African Club anthem

CD Reviews -- Cathi 3/18/07

[+/-] show/hide

Cashman – “Texassippi Stomp” (219 Records) C

George Thorogood wannabe with super distorto guitar and vocal. A bad day at Black Rock. Not recommended.

Catz in the Hatz, The – “Resilience” (Rhombus Records) A-

A surprise! Sinatra-like vocalist over slick jazz/swing instrumentalists. Fresh approach to old standards – I mean “My Funny Valentine” Geez…but it works! They even put “Fur Elise” into a jazz context. It’s a great record and the guitar player SMOKES. All cuts good for morning mix.

Detroit Women – “Sassitude” (Detroit Women Music) B-

Several women singers from Detroit get together and trade off singing lead with mega-chick backups. The backups are GREAT. The lead singers, not so much. Most voices sound like they’ve been singing in bars for quite a while. Gravely. Not bad though with a couple of standouts.

Franklin, Ron – “City Lights” (Memphis International Rec) C-

Yikes….mumbly, whispery vocals you can’t understand over kinda bad guitar – singer songwriter hades. Not recommended.

Lisi, John & Delta Funk – “Dead Cat Bounce” (219 Records) C

They shoulda let that dead cat lie. Whispery, indistinguishable vocal over rock-lite arrangements. Not recommended.

Richey, Kelly – “Speechless” (Sweet Lucy) B

An all instrumental blues rock album from this heavy metal-like blues player. No vocals, lots of SRV/ZZ Top-like guitar licks over road-dawg rock. Pretty nice if this is your cup of tea. Nothing morning mixworthy here though.

Stevens, Corey – “Albertville” (Ruf Records) B

Medium record with fine guitar work. Vocals not inspired, but it’s a solid blues record. Drummer stands out as exceptional. Definitely club-worthy. Does much better when he can emote on a slow number and make that guitar sing.

Watkins, J.T. – “Why Not Tonight Girl?” (Arrow Heart Rec.) B

Soulful vocals over horns and girl backups – kind of B.B. King and Otis Redding-ish, though not quite that caliber. No players listed on the CD cover, but they are good. Mellow disc.

Tinariwen's Aman Iman:
Spinning under the stars in the Sahara Desert, Touaregs from North-Eastern Mali plug finely polished electric guitars into African sounds with hypnoticly-blue sentiments. After being cut off from the ‘outside’ world by an oppressive government, Tinariwen (translating to empty spaces)’s music has been the voice of anti-violence and ethnic pride for the Tamashek people. Tinariwen are like an extended family. Everyone who chooses to participate becomes a musician whether be dancing, chanting, or playing a guitar. From the trance educing nature of this music or piercing spirit of shrills, you too may feel the haunting solitude of these desert herdsmen & women.

The Klezmatics' Wonder Wheel:
Revitalizing Jewish music, the Klezmatics add a modern sound to Woody Guthrie’s lyrical experiences as a resident in Coney Island. Woody’s daughter, Nora found some 3,000 of these lyrics hand written or typed on various papers and she remembered her father’s “yiddishisims.” This album won a Grammy in 2006 and Bloomington is home to Klezmatic, Matt Darriau…so there are many reasons to celebrate and play this music for the listeners! Look inside for a more detailed story about the Guthrie-Klezmatic connection.

Putumayo Presents, Women of the World Acoustic:
Like a gentle breeze pulled into shore from the ocean’s embrace, so is the attraction to these globally gathered women musicians. From Cape Verde, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, to the Czech Republic (and other countries not beginning with the letter C), diverse cultures have representation when Putumayo presents these women with acoustic guitars.

Nanny Assis
Double Rainbow
Singer and percussionist, Nanny Assis was (in 1990), the head musician in Banda Fuzue, one of the many groups performing in Bahia’s Carnival. Since then, he has toured around the world as a jazz percussionist and now releases his first c.d. in the form of a Double Rainbow. It’s double because one bow consists of colors of originality, the other…colors of covers. Some are more recognizable than others, (i.e. Seal’s Kiss From a Rose). The sound maintains a steady softness.

Rough Guide to Salsa Dura, NYC
Know how to salsa? If not, you’ll want to learn after listening to this album. Salsa Dura translates to “real hard Salsa.” Inspired by the chaos and bustle of NYC, Salsa Dura was born in the Bronx, el barrio, mid-town Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Lyrically confronting political themes of racism, anglo-power structure, and injustices, vocalists also sing of love both won and lost, social issues and ethnic pride. The Salsa Dura sound is created by horns, piano, & percussion and was produced in NYC after the Cuban revolution. “This is a tribute to the musicians who are keeping the sound alive. Now it’s time to dance, “!Porque lo que traigo es sabroso!”

Pablo Aslan recent album...
Buenos Aires Tango Standards

Aslan’s standard of tango is that it be braided with jazz. Pablo Alsan features various artists on these tracks while playing the bass, and at times a tango rhythm. From a broad perspective, the jazz elements cast a large shadow over tango rhythms. You may have to be an expert at the dance of tango or listen to this album a few times to find the rhythmical movement here.

Putumayo groovily presents, “A New Groove”

Putumayo people grabbed up d.j.s , producers, and musicians who started their work out of bedrooms and spread their music through digital radio, internet, & around the world. Some artists featured are already swimming their way into WFHB’s pond like, Alice Russell (Boozoo Bajou’s Juke Joint II), and the Cat Empire. None-the-less, here we have a groovy schemer of sounds.
I may suggest these tracks, yet I always encourage you to find your own groove!(1,2,5,6, or 10).
