CD Reviews -- Cathi 1/29/07

[+/-] show/hide

I'm Baaaaaaack...boy there's nothing like a friend who knows how to twist the knobs on this computer stuff is there? Here are the latest reviews from yours truly.

Bibb, Eric – “Diamond Days” (Flatbrim Rec) A

It’s tough to beat Eric Bibb’s mellow rhythm and chocolate voice – hits on the blues level and crosses over to a general audience. This is a better disc overall than his last couple. Infectious beats with change-ups to make it interesting and mellow story songs. Good for all mixes.

Castro, Tommy – “Painkiller” (Blind Pig) B+

Tommy Castro is in the blues rock pocket and getting better and better. He pulls his bag of tricks out on this disc and sounds good, esp. when he doubles on vocals with Bonnie Hayes and Angela Strehli. Coco Montoya tosses in some licks too. Good disc.

Dean, Christopher – “Where I Need to Be” (Lost World Music) C

Not terribly good, not bad. Straight down the middle. Not really recommended.

Nemeth, John – “Magic Touch” (Blind Pig) B+

An interesting harp player with a really good voice who picked up the interest of Anson Funderburgh (who produces the disc) and Jr. Watson (who plays killer guitar). A very tight blues backup sound on some well-written blues tunes. Also backed by the famous Texas horns, known for their blues backup. A surprisingly good newcomer—maybe Anson’s got him in mind for Sam Myer’s replacement?

Rounders – “Wish I Had You (Blind Pig) C

Not my cuppa tea. Slide guitar often doubles the vocals, single-note drums/snare-heavy drums. Vocals a sing-song-y, simple rhyme. Not rocket science. But hey—whatever.

Various – “Ruf Records Anthology” (Ruf) B

An OK collection of blues-rock from Ruf Records. Very cool kick-off with a first song by Jeff Healey and Walter Trout. Ian Parker pulls a cool slow on (#4) and Luther Allison winds the whole thing up with vintage Allison. Others in between rock a bit and Ruf trots out their “crossover” artists. Not bad.

If Looks Could Kill Camera Obscura

link

[+/-] show/hide

date: 01/22/07
Label: Merge
Artist: Camera Obscura
title: If Looks Could Kill
file under: Indie pop
grade: A
Review: If Looks Could Kill was released as a single with 2 new tracks for air time. You may recognize “Looks” from the unanimously popular Let’s Get Out Of This Country released in 2006.
“Hands Up Baby” was recorded with Jari in Stockholm during the album sessions, and “Alaska” was freshly recorded in Scotland.
“Hands Up” is a creepy duet about an obsessive ex-boyfriend. Still great song despite the subject matter-- especially the haunting violin solo.
“Alaska” is also nice. Paints a lovely picture with the words. And besides, I love Sycamore trees.

the latest of international reviews

[+/-] show/hide

Mike Marshall and Hamilton De Holanda releases, "New Words: Novas Palavras."
Two bright Mandolin stars, Brazil’s Hamilton De Holanda and N. America’s Mike Marshall, met a couple of years ago at a Mandolin festival in France. Playing both large and small mandolins, mandocello, tenorgutiar, bandolim, & and Irish Buzouki, they have recently released “New Words.” A c.d. with none of that…little to no words! Some songs are originals, some are covers but all are finger-flicking good!

About Ranarim's Morning Star:
“Rana” is Swedish for beautiful rug/tapestry, “Rim” is the archaic word for “dew,” as Ranarim’s sound brings a “pop” sentiment to traditional music. Thought I would hardly say that the pop stands out more than the sharply harmonized dual female vocals. The general feel of this album is green and endearing. I recommend any of the tracks for morning mixes, but are my favorites:
#1. Clapping
#2. Mouth harp
#3. Upbeat
#4. The harmonic vocal hold at the last few seconds of this track strike the listener still.
#6. Very calm
#13. Med. Tempo; a song to call to the howling of the wind.

I've noticed that the new Scissor Sisters album kinda disappeared and hasn't gotten much airplay. It's pretty neat GBLT themed retro pop. Somebody doing upbeat or dance mixes might want to check it out.

WFHB Adds 1.16.07

[+/-] show/hide

DATE: 1.16.07
ARTIST:Menomena
TITLE: Friend and Foe (Barsuk)
GENRE:ROCK/ALT
GRADE: A+
REVIEW: Juggling a wild sense of experimental pop, psychedelia and indie,
Menomena emerges from the sometimes-primitive effects and weird sounds
that colored its earlier songs for a full-bodied album that keeps all its
quirks as it straightens out the band's sound. Quirks, in fact, are
Menomena's calling card, but the band doesn't let its songcraft
deteriorate in the name of peculiarity. "Muscle'N Flow" plops bursts of
guitar atop a bubbling bass line as drummer/singer Danny Seim holds things
together with a sing-along delivery and clever drum work to split the
difference between Spoon and The Flaming Lips. "Evil Bee" could be a
straightforward jangle-pop effort if the band didn't drop random chunks of
saxophone skronk and keyboards all over it. "Wet and Rusting" gets more
quirky, as it adds backward guitar sections, overlapping vocals and bells
to the pop formula. Menomena's a band of idiosyncrasies, but somehow,
Friend and Foe keeps the band from wallowing in weirdness or going off the
deep end. Friend and Foe's ready for anyone who wants to enjoy its quirks
-- and they're easily enjoyable. With music like this, who needs a crummy
television show to get it into our ears?

ARTIST: Various Artists
TITLE: The Music of The Band (429)
GENRE: ROCK/MAINSTREAM
GRADE: A+
REVIEW: Hard to believe this hasn't been done yet, tributing The Band.
Some of the best songs written in the latter part of the last century,
done by a fairly diverse gaggle of artists. The ones I'm not particularly
fond of even do a fine job.
Enjoy!

ARTIST:Chumbawamba
TITLE: A Singsong and a Scrap (AK Press)
GENRE: ROCK/ALT
GRADE: A
REVIEW:ENGLAND'S Chumbawamba are best known on this side of the pond as
one-hit wonders for their infectious 1997 hit single Tubthumping. Now in
their second decade, these rabble-rousing anarchists have turned down the
loud to offer up a baker's dozen of very fine, folk-inflected,
politically-charged tunes that are well worth hearing.
Bella Ciao is dedicated to a 2001 G8 summit protester killed by police.
You Can relates the story of a mass trespass in the English countryside in
1932 and The Land of Do What You're Told is an ode to the plight of
American slaves. And on and on.... There is great attention paid to
heavenly multi-part vocal harmonies (including a few a cappella gems) and
some top-grade, spine-tingling, acoustic musicianship. Active idealism may
never have sounded so pretty.

DATE: 1.16.07
ARTIST:Vietnam
TITLE: Vietnam (Kemado)
GENRE: ROCK/MAINSTREAM/PSYCH
GRADE: A-
REVIEW: One look at these guys and you know what you're in for: Singer
Michael Gerner most definitely prefers bandannas and beanies to shampoo
and razors, and his grass-scorched vocals testify to years of collecting
Bob Dylan and Lou Reed albums. With the help of bell-bottomed guitarist
Joshua Grubb, drummer Mike Foss and bassist Ivan Berko, Gerner builds
hallucinatory narratives against a backdrop of electrified blues. But
they're not your average hippies. Underneath the band's psychedelia,
there's something else -- something sassy. They don't shy from politics,
either. Gerner's lyrics are stuffed with puns and metaphors -- something
to be valued in today's shallow, materialistic music world. On their debut
LP, Vietnam revisit their roots in yesterday's counterculture, but keep it
real by making the music of the '60s and '70s savory now.

ARTIST:The Cat Empire
TITLE: Two Shoes (Velour)
GENRE: FUNK
GRADE: A
REVIEW: Two Shoes, the second studio album from Melbourne, Australia's Cat
Empire, was cut at the legendary Egrem Studio in Havava, Cuba -- the site
of landmark recordings by the Buena Vista Social Club and countless other
Cuban artists -- in just under a month in late 2004. Like their
self-titled studio debut, Two Shoes was a massive success in the sextet's
homeland, debuting at number one, and its word-of-mouth stoked an already
expanding fan base in Europe and North America -- enough of one to nab the
band a booking at Tennessee's prestigious Bonnaroo music festival in 2006
-- despite the lack of an American release. The fuss was justified: the
Cat Empire is a wholly engaging, genre-splicing band that exudes equal
parts musical intelligence and no-frills party-down exuberance. The Cuban
influence is never far from the surface on Two Shoes, but neither is it
the point of the Havana excursion. Primarily, the Latin brass blasts and
percussion serve to accent rather than define the direction.

ARTIST:The Broken West
TITLE: I can't Go On, I'll Go On (Merge)
GENRE: ROCK/ALT
GRADE: A-
REVIEW:Following up its 2004 debut (the self-released Dutchmans Gold EP),
the artists formerly known as the Brokedown drop their first full-length
with a new, legally sanctioned name and a more streamlined sound. Though
Dutchmans Gold celebrated SoCals alt-country tradition, I Cant Go On, Ill
Go On ratchets up the harmonies, hand claps and keyboards for a
power-pop-leaning album that mixes equal parts Teenage Fanclub and
mid-period Wilco. The impossibly sunny Down In The Valley (the standout on
Dutchmans Gold) gets a welcome encore, filled with heavy percussion and an
irresistible chorus straight out of Roger McGuinns most
whipped-cream-covered dreams. Parts of I Cant Go On couldve been cribbed
from the Summerteeth fakebook (the sugar-sweet ooh oohs of Hale Sunrise
and Shiftee, the rollicking piano of Brass Ring), but its tough to raise
any originality beef with melodies this contagious. A few more distinctive
touches, like the synth tone growling through the starry-eyed Big City and
the cavernous desperation of Baby On My Arm, mightve been welcome, but for
the most part, the Broken West gives fans who pine for the Jeff Tweedy/Jay
Bennett era plenty to go on.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11
REVIEWER: Chris Barton www.magnetmagazine.com

DATE: 1.16.07
ARTIST:The Good, The Bad & The Queen
TITLE: S/T (Parlophone)
GENRE: ROCK/ALT
GRADE: A
REVIEW:With its elegaic tone, The Good, the Bad and the Queen might be
considered a belated, more melancholy follow-up to the social observation
of early Blur albums like Modern Life Is Rubbish and Parklife. "It's not a
nostalgic play on Englishness," Albarn has claimed. "It's more about what
I think it is to be English now." The mood is set by the opening "History
Song", a recollection of "Ships across the estuary/Sundays lost in
melancholy", before the gentle bed of sliding acoustic guitar, organ and
subtle drums collapses in on itself. Tracks such as "80s Life", "Kingdom
Of Doom" and "Green Fields" develop further the wistful tone of regret for
lost places and principles. As he gazes across the city Albarn notes how
the green fields have turned into stone. Not that this album is infused
with the hustle and bustle of the city: it's a much more thoughtful
portrait the band is painting, tapping into something deeper and less
sharply defined about London. Musically, the album is a peculiar blend of
disparate elements complicated by the band's habit of building a song from
separate blocks of riffs. Ex-Clash Paul Simonon's basslines reflect his
dub interests more than his punk background, loping along with a languid
muscularity, while former Verve guitarist Simon Tong furnishes a wide
range of textures, from acoustic arpeggios to stealthy lead lines and
shards of treated guitar noise. But it's Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen who's
the star player: where one might have expected forceful, driving African
rhythms, he plays complex, jazzy figures in a quiet, understated manner
that doesn't overpower the subtle songs, but helps glue them together more
firmly.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS:1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11
REVIEWER: independent.co.uk Andy Gill

DATE: 1.16.07
ARTIST:Peppertown
TITLE: Firefly (SOL Records)
GENRE:ROCK/MAINSTREAM/INDIANA
GRADE: B+
REVIEW: Peppertown is a unique blend of alt-country rock infused with a
slight Bruce Hornsby meets John Cougar flare. Their base roots embrace
blues and 70s southern rock which makes for a pleasant, if not
predictable, mid-western delivery. Hailing from Indiana, the quintet has
spent the last year playing roadside bars from Cincinnati and Louisville
to Indianapolis. 23 year-old Scott Siefferman leads the band with his
nasal baritone and acoustic guitar. He can craft a hook as thats
immediately addictive like the intoxicating She Runs From Me or the amped
up Bob Seger-like Cold Hand. Yet, its his candid, direct and, at times,
deeply personal lyrics that elevate the songwriting. Joined by lead
guitarist Ryan Baker, bassist Keith Eckstein and ex-Pure Grain rhythm
section Brian DeBruler (drums) and Michelle DAmico (percussionist) the
five come together in a tangle web of rustic folk and exhilarating jams.
There are the elegant guitar sweeps in Change My Ways, the Santana
wizardry of Season of the Burn and the mesmerizing coaching of Alone Again
where Siefferman vocals meet layered harmonies that drip like honey over a
keyboard ripple. Over 11-tracks, the five-piece showcase some serious
chops proving to be well-rehearsed instrumentalists as well as unique and
original in their songwriting. Funny how even in their darkest, bluesy
moments Peppertown still conjure up memories of the Smithereens and
BoDeans.

I really dig Menomena, it seems to be well perched between being experimental and being easily accessible.
Chumbawumba is a defiance of all expectations I had for it, which is good.
Was anyone else a little disappointed with Lee Ann Womack's cover of "The Weight"? It seems that one of the best parts of The Band was how raw and loose all of the songs were. With all of the harmonies coming in perfectly with pitch and timing, it almost seems to defy the spirit of the original. Although, I suppose I should consider that tribute albums ideally reinterpret the original material rather than replicate it.
Does anyone else have thoughts good or bad about tracks from Endless Highway?

"Afro" review!

[+/-] show/hide

Novalima's, "Afro": This collective began in 2001 when 4 Peruvian musicians began to blend Afro-Peruvian and Latin percussion with down tempo, dub, broken, and house beats. “Afro” re-lives the stories of black people in Peru who wrote about their fears, sufferings, culture and anguish after they were chained to boats and taken from W. Africa to be enslaved in European colonies in the Americas. With a listen to this album, you’ll feel the music repeatedly asking your body to dance to its rhythmical splendor. You’ll also hear samples from Peruvian legends such as Lucha Reyes, Lucilia Campos, & Zambo Cavero. All tracks are soulful, my recommendations are as follows:
#1. Begins w/ traditional percussive sounds then graduates to a larger sound with a full band.
#3. Slower tempo, strong female vocals w/ trumpet & synth beats.
#4. If you can’t salsa, you can 2 step to this!
#8. Rhythm & bass guitar, vocals sampled, somewhat redundant/trance inducing.
#9. Slow tempo at first, but when rhythms catch, it completes the wheel of yr. listening pleasure.
#12. More opportunities to clap and dance!
#13. Med.-tempo, tango/flamenco feel.

NEW IN WFHB ADDPOOL 1/9/07

[+/-] show/hide

DATE: 1.9.07
ARTIST: Rivulets
TITLE: You Are My Home (Important)
GENRE: LOCAL
GRADE: A+
REVIEW: Nathan Amundson (a.k.a. Rivulets) has consistently crafted stellar
minimalist pop over the course of three records, yet You Are My Home still
feels like a breakthrough. Here his careful melodies, cautious singing and
full-band climaxes hit all the right spots, impeccably patterned yet with
no hint of overwrought labor. The title track is the albums
mini-masterpiece, an aching procession spurred by guest contributions from
Jessica Bailiffs sandy guitar, the plaintive strains of Fred Lonborg-Holms
cello and Christian Fredericksons viola, plus Amundsons simple acoustic
chords and gentle piano tracings. Inside this mix of slow-burning
elements, the prize is Amundsons vocal, which darts around in hesitant,
cracking spikes. It gives the track both a stoic chill and a dewy drama,
and Amundson marries those moods as gracefully as he doles out his
purposeful strums. (The passage about four minutes in where his hums melt
into the surrounding strings helps a lot too). Squint your ears and you
might hear a Will Oldham tune sung by Sufjan, or a Low classic played by
locals in the back of the pub. Admundsons humble epic may evoke great
influences, but its summed parts produce a poignancy all their own.

ARTIST: David Kilgour
TITLE: The Far Now (Merge)
GENRE: ROCK ALT
GRADE: A
REVIEW: Kilgour's first band, The Clean, changed the face of rock music
when they kick-started New Zealand's pop underground in the early 80's.
More than 25 years later, Kilgour still loves music but loves life more,
which is why he's still making records that are monuments to good
old-fashioned song craft. This is his third record for Merge and sixth
solo affair. It takes some cues from its predecessors, the shimmering,
trippy "A Feather In The Engine" and the lush, soul-tinged "Frozen
Orange", without sounding like either of them. "The Far Now" is filled
with gorgeous melodies, singing that conveys subtle emotion, and
effortlessly eloquent guitar playing.

TITLE: Sing You Sinners (Nettwerk)
GENRE: FOLK/SS
GRADE: A-
REVIEW: Erin's solo records are much more eclectic and quirky and
creative, this one seems just for fun. And it is. Sort of a psuedo-jazz
sound (she makes no claims to the genre), taking on a whole bunch of
classic songs that are fun and swinging. While the album on full listen
has a certain sameness to it, one track at a time should sound great
on the air.

ARTIST: Tony Furtado
TITLE: Thirteen (Funzalo)
GENRE: FOLK/SS
GRADE: A-
REVIEW: With Thirteen, Tony Furtado fulfills the immense promise of his
2004 breakthrough These Chains, his initial foray into songwriting and
singing. Theretofore, Furtado had been known primarily for his prodigious
instrumental recordings. But listeners will have no doubt when they hear
the opening strains of Used, the new albums lead track, that Furtado is a
man on a mission. All the while his phalanx of fretted instruments
provides a thrilling visceral reminder of Furtados prowess as an ax
wielder of the highest order. Thirteen reveals Furtado as an artist with a
great deal on his mind and a full arsenal of skills with which to express
his thoughts and feelings. Recorded to 16-track, two-inch analog tape
during the summer of 2005 at Tucsons Wavelab Studios (a favorite venue for
Calexico, Neko Case, M. Ward, Iron & Wine and other cult heroes), the
album features an all-star cast including keyboardists Sean Slade (whose
production credits include Uncle Tupelo and Radiohead) and Jim Dickinson
(producer of the seminal Ry Cooder albums that inspired Furtado to take up
the slide guitar, plus Big Star and the Replacements), bassist Dusty
Wakeman (whose resume includes three previous Furtado LPs, Dwight Yoakam,
Lucinda Williams and Anne McCue), drummer Winston Watson (who has played
with Dylan and Giant Sand) and Wavelabs own Craig Schumacher (Calexico,
Case, Iron & Wine), who produced and engineered. In addition to ten
first-rate originals, Furtado recorded three cover songs for the album.
The Whos Wont Get Fooled Again and Creedence Clearwater Revivals Fortunate
Son extend the political and personal luck theme of Thirteen; and a
whimsical take on Elton John's Take Me to the Pilot allows this musically
and conceptually dense song cycle to catch its breath before soldiering on.

ARTIST: Sloan
TITLE: Never Hear The End Of It (Yep Roc)
GENRE: ROCK/MAINSTREAM
GRADE: A-
REVIEW: Never before has a Sloan record generated such extreme reviews by
critics and fans. The band's eighth studio recording, Never Hear the End
of It, contains a whopping 30 songs on one disc, ranging from 50 seconds
to just over five minutes in length. The bulk of those tracks average
roughly two-and-a-half minutes and bleed into each other--at times rather
abruptly. As a result, the disc feels like an eccentric art-project; even
the strongest tracks prove to be more of an appetizer, leaving listeners
longing for a main course. Stylistically, there are no surprises. The
group's music tends to fall into Sloan's two traditional categories:
Beatles-esque stylings or '70s-influenced rock tunes. Noteworthy
highlights include disc opener "Flying High Again" with its Crosby, Stills
& Nash harmonies, and the blisteringly old-school punk rock pacing of
"HFXNSHC." Fans of this disc compare Never's nonstop onslaught of songs to
Liz Phair's Exile In Guyville or the Clash's Sandinista, while naysayers
find the short, fast melodies insufficient in length and substance. Like
all music, beauty is in the ear of the beholder, so expect Never Hear the
End of It to be on many critics' Best or Worst lists at year's end.

ARTIST: Astrid Williamson
TITLE: Day Of The Lone Wolf (Incarnation)
GENRE: FOLK/SS
GRADE: A
REVIEW: Day Of The Lone Wolf, Astrid's third solo album,is one that slowly
reveals its excellence each time you listen, in the way that the best
albums often do. Those familiar with Astrid's work so far won't be
disappointed. It has the usual appealing mix of melodic pop (Superman II,
Sshh...), atmospheric soundscapes (Amarylis, Another Twisted Thing) and
tender slowies (Reach, True Romance, Forgive Me) that all hang together
beautifully as a whole to provide a thrilling listen. Like the NME said
about her first album, "the songs sound like they've been lived rather
than dreamt up", and that's down to Astrid's ability to lay down a subtle
but affecting vocal where others would overstate and over-emphasise to the
detriment of the songs. I'm no expert on production, but it sounds like a
good job was done here, and the band Astrid plays with on this album add
yet another dimension to her sound. If you're unfamilar with Astrid's
music, take a chance on this album - you won't regret it.

ARTIST:The Postmarks
TITLE: The Postmarks (Unfiltered)
GENRE: ROCK/MAINSTREAM
GRADE: A-
REVIEW: The Postmarks describe the environment where their songs and
recordings have been carefully crafted as a heartbreak factory. Opening
the factory doors is an act that reveals the journey the members took from
the creative mire of emptiness to the overflowing well of heartbreak. A
journey that helped them emerge at the forefront of the nouveau pop
movement. With nods to French pop and Brian Wilsons orchestral
arrangements, The Postmarks believe they can rekindle the love affair
people once had for beautiful music and well-crafted songs about the
trials and tribulations of life.

ARTIST: Bill Kirchen
TITLE: Hammer Of The Honky-Tonk Gods (Proper)
GENRE:ROCK/MAINSTREAM
GRADE: A
REVIEW: Guitarist Bill Kirchen was the picker who played the iconically
twangy guitar on Commander Codys Hot Rod Lincoln, so its no surprise that
the title track to this album celebrates the Fender Telecaster. The album
is more than just a guitar demonstration, though. In fact, its very much a
song album, and the songs seem effortless. He shifts gears from honky-tonk
to country to pop and R&B easily, never losing his sound or the song in
the process. Like so many sideman albums, Kirchens could use a more
clearly defined personality, but his unassuming manner and respect for
rock and soul traditions is endearing.

2006 Remnants

[+/-] show/hide

Some of these are late in being reviewed, but still worthwhile and deserve airplay! They'll be at the station tomorrow.

Artist: Anonymous 4 (featuring Darol Anger & Mike Marshall)
Title: Gloryland Label: Harmonia Mundi
Grade: A Genre: Folk/Americana

Revival songs, folk hymns, gospel tunes, and religious ballads make up this modern retelling of classic American songs with a focus on the harmonies and emulation of traditional singing styles of the Southern mountains. Although there seems to be a strong focus on accuracy of vocal performance and the historical accuracy of lyrics and sources of songs, this album is far from stagnant. The vocal harmonies of Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, Jacqueline Horner, and Johanna Maria Rose, though obviously thoroughly practiced, are dynamic. Their voices are rich and timeless. Add the insturmentation of Darol Anger and Mike Marshall and you have a beautiful folk record good for morning and afternoon mixes as well as Saturday specialty shows. For more information, see the copious liner notes—also in German!

Favorites:
#9 “Return Again” – mid-tempo revival song
#13 “Merrick” – mid-tempo revival song, great harmonies
#16 “Just Over in the Gloryland” – up-tempo gospel song
#19 “Green Pastures” – uplifting gospel song

Artist: The Carter Family
Title: Together Again Label: Sphere Records
Grade: B Genre: Folk/Country

Nothing extremely new or fresh here, but it is a later recording of Helen, Anita, and June—circa 1991. This has never been released before, so cynically I must conclude that Sphere Records is hoping to make a buck on the value of a posthumous release. Nevertheless, it is good to hear these voices again, and even though it was recorded in ’91, it still has the signature pared down folky feeling of old Carter Family recordings. You’ll find classics that won’t disappoint or surprise, like “Foggy Mountain Top” (#1); “Clinch Mountain Home” (#3); Blue Eyes (#5); and “Worried Man Blues” (#7). Lesser known tracks like “The Winding Stream” (#4) and “Amber Tresses” (#12) make this recording special.

Artist: The Essex Green
Title: Cannibal Sea Label: Merge
Grade: A- Genre: Alternative/Indie

Perfectly poppy, with a twinge of 60’s folk, these songs sound classic though they are all new. Brooklyn-based, these songs are connected by a theme of travel and wanderlust faced by the reality of big city living. Great, up-beat songs that rival the infectiousness of a Camera Obscura or Belle & Sebastian—good for any time of the day.

Favorites:
#3 “Penny and Jack” – dueling male/female vocals, brit-pop-ish
#6 “Cardinal Points”
#7 “Rabbit” – slower folky ballad
#10 “Sin City”

--reviewed by Corinna Manion

Artist: Peter and the Wolf
Title: Lightness Label: The Worker’s Institute
Grade: A Genre: Alternative/Indie

Great album for the winter—-full of haunting textures and soft-spoken vocal styles. Folky style reminds one a lot of Little Wings or Thanksgiving, but with more interesting lyrics and more obsessed with a cynical but whimsical lost love (think Magnetic Fields). Recommended for afternoon mixes and late nights.

Favorites:
#3 “Safe Travels” – up-tempo highway song
#4 “My Grey Overcoat” – slow, moody (watch for the last minute—mostly incoherent street sounds, should fade if daytime mix)
#5 “The Highway” – slow, nice harmonies
#8 “The Bonsai Tree” – up-tempo, lyrics ala Magnetic Fields, ukulele-driven!

Rhythms of the River: This album features various artists signed to the Riverboat label. It is a gem of globalization. My favorite tracks include:
#4. Quite uplifting, great rhythm changes
#5. Slide guitar, beautiful vocals
#6. Sharply composed
#7. Gently haunts
#8. More synthesized than other tracks, upbeat urban feel.
#9. Could this be David Byrne in disguise?
#11. Deep vocals w/ simple yet evocative rhythm, accordion, and strings.
#15. Saucy
#17. Catchy, the kind you want to catch…and keep.

Ras Rebel's latest release, CrossRoads...Earl Paton, (a.k.a. Ras Rebel) says he sticks to old-school reggae with conscious lyrics and “hard-hitting” rhythms, where he drops the occasional “club banger”. What’s playable of this album sounds rather “club bangin’” to me. Many tracks FCC-ed. Here's a hed's up on what you might find within a listen;
#1. Instrumental w/ drum machine and piano.
#2. Club, reggae sound.
#7. Hip-reggae-hop.
Unfortunately for radio programmers, track 6 is FCC-ed. This track uses interesting samples, citar, and message. Along with 6, forget about playing 4 and 5 as well.

Marcel Khalife is known as the Lebanese master of oud (an Arabic lute), and the “Bob Dylan” of the M. East. His music combines ancient Arab musical traditions with western elements and instruments. The Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish, has given him inspiration since the 70's when he witnessed Palestinian refugee camps around Beruit. Shortly after he became a strong supporter of the Nationalist Movement. Marcel is now an exile living in Paris who was once imprisoned and charged with “degrading Islam” because he used a couplet from the Koran in one of his songs. In 2005, he was named UNESCO Artist for peace, although it is no longer safe for him to live in his original country. His album, Taqasim is best played in it's entirety, and i am particularly drawn to tracks; 2, 11, and 15.

The Rough Guide to Latin-Arabia recently released on the World Music Network label : Welcome to musical combinations from Havana nights and Arabian knights…care to dance? Flamenco, rumba, salsa, belly? After listening to this album, I think that Arabic and Latin music go together like beans and rice, creating an enchanting mid-munch. Check out the track/artist notes, there are some interesting stories…and these are some of my favorite tracks:
#1. Nubian Mambo!
#2. Sounds of Columbian Cumbia with Arabic vocals.
#3. Rebellious Raj music from Algeria.
#7. Electric violin led hybrid of Middle Eastern Cumbia!

Sally Nyolo & the original bands of Yaounde
Studio Cameroon: Sally left Cameroon for Paris when she was 13, where she developed her singing career. Since joining the vocal group, Zap Mama she has released at least 3 solo albums. Sally moved home to collaborate with local artists in Yaounde. The outcome is an array of beautiful sounds contained on Studio Cameroon. When polyrhythmic is the name of the game, it matters not what you choose…you shan’t loose! All tracks are play-worthy and all are quite polyrhythmic with the exception of three; tracks 11, 12, and 13 have subdued rhythms, comparatively.

Hi. I actually listened to Tall Steve on NYE...well, I missed about 15 in the middle, but caught the beginning and end. Not sure if Steve sees this, but do pass it on that I didn't feel so alone as I made up my resolution's list as he counted down the last minute...
