Jeff Healey – “Mess of Blues” (Ruf) A-

A true bar band…forexcitement and dancing. This is Healey doing his bar band thing and blastin’. It was his last record…and a returnto strictly blues after some great jazz discs. He loved stretching out with his band & the roadhouse blues. This really reflects that. It’s fun!

Jackson, Ken – “Got an Issue, Git a Tissue” (Indie) D-

I needed a tissue to mop up the cookies I lost when I heard this. A record-breaking no thanks.

King, Chris Thomas – “Live on Beale Street” (21^st Century Blues) B

Blues with a psychedelic guitar touch. Lots of distortion with a slammin’drummer. He’s workin’ it with a wah-wah pedal, a tube-screamin’ guitar, largely funky bass, and guess what – rap over hip-hop beat. Talks and calls to live audience. More of an approach than I’m used to with CTK. Fair amount of cussin’.

Mississippi Heat – “The Heat Is ON..Here to Stay” (Delmark) A-

Great blues band keeps the pocket groovin’ behind new steady blues mama, Inetta Visor. Guests Lurrie Bell and Carl Weathersby, among others, add some really cool colors to the hot rhythm section and occasional horn backups. A very good club (and listening) blues band. Pierre Lacocque keeps the lid on his sometimes roving harp lines and delivers very nicely throughout. Very recommended for a good-feeling blues.

Spector, Dave – “Live in Chicago” (Delmark) B+

Blues guitar great Spector joins with a solid backup group to feature his great instrumentals, and the vocals of good friend, Tad Robinson, and Jimmy Johnson. Songs are live at two clubs and you can tell Dave’s guitar work is stellar. Sharon Lewis also sings to bring the lady’s sound into the mix. Dave’s shines on instrumentals. Nice club fare.
